Sony Computer Entertainment America will once again take gaming to the next level with the release of their highly anticipated Playstation 3 on Tuesday, Nov. 14.
“I have been waiting patiently for the release of PS3 and now that it’s this close, I will be the first to purchase it,” said Ormond Beard, a senior psychology major from Grambling.
The new system will be available to consumers in two variations sporting two different price tags.
One console contains a 60GB hard disk drive and will cost $599 to take home. The cheaper system will cost $499 but only contains a 20GB hard disk drive.
According to Sony officials, the Playstation 3 hard disk drive will be removable and upgradeable for gamers who want the option of achieving more with their systems.
Consumers who had already collected an array of video game titles with their Playstation and Playstation 2 consoles need not worry about not being able to play their favorite games on the new system because officials said they would be compatible with the new system as well.
But Sony officials said gamers shouldn’t be stuck on the past since the Playstation 3 will offer an entirely new line of video game titles that will surpass their previous systems.
“Our line up of PS3 games that will be available through the holidays is unprecedented in terms of volume, variety and innovation,” said Kaz Hirai, president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America.
In addition to a variety of software titles, SCEA also unveiled the free online and network services provided through Playstation 3, which will offer distinctive benefits to consumers and developers alike.
“I’m going to buy the PS3 for my little brother,” said Christina Gattling, a junior speech pathology major from Miami.
The Playstation 3’s most innovative change will be the multi-axis motion sensing system found in the new controllers. The new technology will provide gamers with a seamless interactive operation making it easier for users to maneuver the controller as a natural extension of their bodies, said Sony officials.
Some Southern University students said they prefer the cheaper console because of unrecognizable differences between the two.
“If I purchase the new PS3, I will be purchasing the one that cost $499 because really I don’t see the difference in the two,” said Chaz Handy, a junior secondary education major from Baton Rouge.
