Southern’s Center for Student Success has begun its seminar series. Director Jaquator Hamer said the series began in the Fall 2003 and has been an ongoing success.
“The goal of the seminar series is to help all students achieve academic success by providing them with support that will strengthen their academic performance,” Hamer said. “The word is out, as is evident by the turnout which has been significant and is greatly improving.”
Hamer said one of the main focuses of the seminar series is to help students become aware of the university’s resources and how to utilize them to meet their individual needs.
Micae’la Simpson, a freshman mass communications major from Eunice, said the Fall 2005 series was very resourceful and gave her a great boost with her decision making.
“I was able to obtain valuable information that helped me to decide on a major that was compatible with my interests,” Simpson said.
The Center for Student Success is not only for the students needs, but can also be utilized by instructors.
“Professors have invited the center into their classes for seminars and we are always willing to assist every organization on campus by speaking at their events,” Hamer said.
Sessions in the seminar series include Unraveling the Textbook Maze, Choosing a Major and Career, Where There’s a Will, There’s an A, Beating Test Anxiety, Take a Vacation from Stress and Sink or Swim: Survival Tips for Final Exam Success.
The Seminar Series will be held through April 13, in Stewart Hall’s Lawless Auditorium. No pre-registration is required and they are free of charge. For more information call (225) 771-4377.
