Southern’s Lady Jaguars bowling team ripped the current conference champs Texas Southern Lady Tigers of their winning stripes, and proved to the Southwestern Athletic Conference that stripes don’t mean anything without strength.
“The team continues to be strong,” said head coach Karen Couvillon. “Everybody played well throughout the conference season.”
Texas Southern tried to come back in the three doubles event, counting one doubles match, but the Lady Jags continued to cut the lead down in the Baker matches and ended up with the victory. Southern’s win boosted its record to 6-0 for the season and the Lady Jags will now go on to compete in the SWAC championship in Birmingham, Ala., scheduled for Feb. 24 — 26.
Freshman Cassandra Shivers not only leads the Lady Jags, she also leads the SWAC with 197.7 pins per contest.
She obtained a 6-7-10 split in the match against the Lady Tigers. Overall, she placed first with a 191.5 average.
“Cassandra is a player every coach would want to have on their team,” Couvillon said. “She comes through when you need her most.”
Keosha Moore, Casey Lofthouse and Erin Williams bowled over 600 to win the singles event match giving the Lady Jaguars a 2,982-2,692 win in the first phase of the match.
“We will be looking for them to step their play up as we go for our fourth SWAC championship and second NCAA appearance,” Couvillon said.
