If you ask track Head Coach Johnny Thomas if he is excited about getting ready for the Southwestern Athletic Conference Championship he proudly he will tell you he’s always excited.
The indoor track team is preparing for next week’s championship by participating in the Louisiana State University Twilight Meet Friday at 3 p.m. The Jaguar’s have never participated in a meet before the conference championship and usually use that week to sharpen up.
“We needed to get another meet in, so we are taking a chance on participating, hoping and praying no one gets hurt,” Thomas said. “We will need everybody next week for SWAC because it will be probably the toughest SWAC we have had in quite some time.”
Thomas said this is a disadvantage but an advantage for his young team needing another meet to prepare. This meet also gives them the opportunity to run on the track that will be used for the championship, which some have never ran on before. This will also give those athletes who haven’t competed before a chance to do so.
“We’re very young, very inexperienced”, Thomas said. “We really don’t have an identity yet. So we will find out exactly who we are and what we are when we run at the SWAC next week and we will build from that.”
The team also has to deal with two of their best runners out with injuries. After the meet, it will be finalized on which athlete will be participating in the events for the conference championship.
“Friday evening we will get a feel of the track and a feel of ourselves and we will use the best times,” Thomas said. “The second the meet is over, I will know exactly who will be running.”
