Throughout the month of February, Southern University’s Student Government Association will sponsor various events celebrating Black History Month.
“The purpose for the activities is to give students an opportunity to explore the integrity of African-American culture and history as a whole,” said SGA President Justin McCorkle. “The SGA as a whole hopes to leave the students with a sense of empowerment with a newfound purpose while sustaining integrity as well as appreciation for the African American struggle of the past and the current struggles of today.”
The Black History Month events kicked off Thursday with a speech by Julia Hare, co-founder of The Black Think Tank and will close Feb. 25 with the State of the Black Student Symposium, to be moderated by Black Entertainment Television’s Jeffrey “Cousin Jeff” Johnson. The event will take place in the Felton G. Clark Activity Center and will be televised.
“We hope all students attend because the symposium will highlight issues involving African-American students,” McCorkle said.
Two other events McCorkle highlighted were the Snow Night, which will take place Feb. 16 in the Cotillion Ballroom of the Smith-Brown Memorial Ballroom. Four tons of snow will be brought in. Another event will be the Baton Rouge College Reunion held at the parade grounds.
“The College Reunion is a scaled down spring festival with free food, music and fun,” McCorkle said. “Plus the other Baton Rouge colleges(such as ) BRCC and LSU will also be there.
“Black history means a time of reflecting, looking back on the past and looking forward to the future,” he said.
