The Jaguars 59-56 victory over Mississippi Valley on Monday almost seemed unlikely as they manage to keep their place atop the Southwestern Athletic Conference standings.
“In the second half, we had a second team effort,” said Head Coach Sandy Pugh. “Rolanda (Monroe) had the energy and the fire she needed and a supporting cast. I tell them that you can’t sit and watch one person, you have to do as a committee.”
In the game against Valley, senior guard Monroe doubled her previous career high with 14 rebounds, 16 points, five assists and one steal. Sophomore center Fredrieka Lewis played just as well as her teammate with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
Freshmen guard Diedra Jackson recorded her first double point night in her collegiate career with 10 points and four rebounds.
Monroe was named SWAC’s player of the week averaging 18.0 points, 9.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 1.5 steals.
Sophomore forward Indi Johnson was mentioned this week as a notable performance for her weekly averages of 7.5 points, 9.5 rebounds, and 1.0 block.
Pugh said the upcoming next three road games will be critical for the Jaguars in hopes of the SWAC championship
“We’re looking forward to the trip and the possibilities on what we can accomplish,” Pugh said. “Our championship hopes come to these three games.”
Southern (13-9 overall, 10-3 SWAC) will be traveling to the state of Alabama and Mississippi for the three-game journey. They will face the Lady Bulldogs of Alabama A&M University on Saturday, Alabama State University Lady Hornets on Feb. 20 and then the Alcorn State Lady Braves on Feb. 25. All games are scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.
