During this week, Southern University students and faculty will celebrate the annual Springfest.
Kicking off Thursday is the Comedy Show, which will be held in the F.G. Clark Activity Center starting at 7:30 p.m. Comedians will include Red Bone, Lav Luv and B Phlat.
Known for having “colorblind” comedy routines, Redbone has put viewers from BET’s Comic View and Comedy Central in stitches by using high-energy, comedic timing and ability to poke fun at all races in each show.
Lav Luv, a seasoned comedian who has opened for Ashanti, Musiq, Bow Wow and Gerald Levert, is also a member of the only all black improvisation troop in the country, the Blacktop Circus. Notorious for tackling tough issues such as poverty, politics, race and relationships in a way that is both thought provoking and hilarious, Luv is a comedian to watch.
The final person to complete the trio of comedians is Beverly “B Phlat” Nelson. After graduating from Fontbonne College, Nelson moved to Philadelphia where she hones her skills as a positive comedian. Unlike other female comedians, Nelson does not rely on man-bashing, profanity or being overly sexually graphic, but she urges women to regard themselves with higher esteem.
“Quit trying to maintain a man,” Nelson often says at the end of her routine, “maintain yourself and the man will have to follow.”
The Greek show, which will also be held at the Clark Center, will take place on Friday at 7 p.m. The six active fraternites and sororities will entertain students with their stepping talents.
Ending the spring festivities is the concert, which will take place Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the lawn of Mayberry cafeteria. Student Government Association President, Justin McCorkle, said he urges all students to attend the events.
“The concert is more like a family picnic. You can bring blankets and towels to sit on,” he said. “Food and drinks will also be provided.”
This year’s theme, “Fight to Protect the Right,” is a message to all Southern students to not only register, but also vote.
“Our theme this year is going along with the controversy with the displaced citizens of New Orleans not being able to vote,” McCorkle said.
Performers included Neo Soul powerhouse Erykah Badu, who has recorded classics like “Tyrone” and “Bad Lady.” Rap artist and Port Arthur native Bernard “Bun B” Freeman will also perform at Springiest. Also a member of the hip hop group UGK, Bun B has had major success with the singles “3 Kings” with rapper Slim Thug and “Gimmie That” with Webbie.
Entry to any Springfest event requires students have a valid ID.
