The Southern University golf men’s and women’s teams are preparing for the Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament Saturday thru Monday. The Jaguars will leave for Philadelphia, Miss. to compete at the Dancing Rabbit Golf Club course.
Team captain and leader Wayne Birch, a senior secondary education major who is familiar with the course, said he is confident about the terrain and team’s skill level, and he just hopes for great weather.
“Every time I’ve played on it, (Dancing Rabbit) it’s been cold and raining, so hopefully it will be some good weather,” said Birch. “I feel very good, very positive about this (tournament). We have qualifiers; we are taking the top six. I feel like my time has finally come to win a SWAC championship.”
Both teams won their last two tournaments at Alabama A&M March 26-28 and at Texas Southern during March 13-15. If the players play to their capabilities then we should have a real great chance of competing in SWAC, the Jaguars coach Willie Williams said.
“Jackson State is always strong,” Williams said of the defending champions. “Alcorn has a pretty good team so it’s going to be competitive.”
Last season Jackson State men’s and women’s teams took the SWAC championship. Jackson State built a golf dynasty, winning the championship 18 consecutive years. The Jags men’s team placed fourth while the women finished in third.
