The Thurgood Marshall Fundraising School recently named Al B. Baron, director of the Office of Career Services at Southern University, as the recipient of an award for outstanding performance as a placement coordinator. Baron took the first course entitled “Principles and Techniques of Fundraising” from the fundraising school.
“I am very honored about the award,” Baron said. “It made me feel that the hard work of the office is appreciated and that our work for the students is honored.”
The course was part of a workshop offered at the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund’s 6th Annual Presidents’ & Member Schools’ Professional Conference. Baron was honored during a luncheon March 9 in Houston.
“It is a reflection of the university and the staff of the Career Services. The award shows our dedication to the students,” Baron said.
Baron became director of Career Services in 1985. Upon graduating from Southern University with a Bachelor’s in Business Management in 1981, Baron served as a career counselor in the placement office. While serving as director, Baron also received his Master’s degree from Southern and received his Doctorate from Summit University in Louisiana. Baron received training under the leadership of the late Odell Compton, of whom he dedicates his award to.
“We are working to give our students an opportunity, as African Americans, in a high pace business world,” Baron said.
Barron also dedicates his award to the entire career services staff including Will Jordan, retiree, Brenda Robertson, recruiting coordinator, Pamela Patton, assistant director/counselor, Carlette Powell, career counselor, and Julie Wessinger, associate director.
