The Louisiana Bar Foundation will honor Southern University Law Center Chancellor Freddie Pitcher as one of its 2005 Louisiana Distinguished Professors.
A formal reception to honor Pitcher will be held at Houmas House Plantation in Gonzales, on May 4, at 7 p.m.
“I’m very elated about the honor, even though I’ve been here for three years”, said Pitcher.
Dennette Young, communication director of the Louisiana Bar Foundation, said Pitcher is the perfect candidate for the honor.
“He fits the criteria for what is a distinguished professor,” Young said.
Pitcher became chancellor of the Law Center in 2003, while already teaching there.
His instructor experience includes his years as an adjunct professor at the Law Center and LSU’s Paul M. Herbert Law Center.
“I feel the decision was based on the innovative things I and some of the people at the Law Center have done”, Pitcher said.
While at Southern, Pitcher petitioned for a part-time evening division curriculum.
Under his watch, a study abroad program in England was created, along with a distance learning partnership with the New York University Law School.
Since serving as chancellor, Pitcher has been appointed to a three-year term on the American Bar Association Law School Legal Educating Section’s Committee on Professionalism and was named to the ABA Site Evaluation Team for Reaccrediting Law Schools in 2004.
As a judge, Pitcher authored approximately 200 judicial opinions while serving on the Louisiana First Circuit Court of Appeal.
“With all the things he has done, he truly disserves the award”, Young said.
