The following are correspondences submitted to SUBR Chancellor Edward R. Jackson following the Southern men’s basketball game versus Duke in the first round of the 2006 NCAA Tournament. According to the letters, Southern ‘s team, band, dance team and cheerleading squad made an impressive showing.
Chancellor Jackson,
I had the pleasure of seeing Southern University play at the NCAA tournament in Greensboro last Thursday. I wanted to take the opportunity to congratulate your players and coaches for the outstanding sportsmanship they displayed on the court. I was very impressed when each player after their introduction shook hands with each official and the Duke coaches before meeting their respective Duke counterpart at center court. Too often compliments are not given — only criticism. You and your administration should be very proud of your players – and your band members and cheerleaders – for the fine representation of Southern University they brought to Greensboro. Your band and cheerleaders were the highlight of the entire day!
Congratulations!

Dear Mr. Jackson,
My wife and I are residents of North Carolina and recently attended the first and second round games of the NCAA men’s tournament in Greensboro. We were quite impressed with the spirit your team demonstrated and the effort they displayed in representing your university. In addition, your cheerleading squad and pep band stole the show and were the highlight of the two-day event.
Our impression from the reaction of the audience was that they enjoyed the cheerleaders and pep band as much (if not more so) than the two days of basketball.
You and your university should be proud of your basketball team, cheerleading squad and pep band. You may not have won the basketball game, but you left your mark on Tobacco Road, the hot bed of college basketball.
Sincerely,
Don and Peggy Saulpaugh

Dear Mr. Jackson,
First of all, congratulations to Southern University for winning the SWAC Basketball Championship and its invitation to NCAA Tournament. I had the great fortune of being in attendance for the Southern Jaguars vs Duke Blue Devils game on 3/16/06 in Greensboro, North Carolina. I enjoyed the game very much. But I must say, I was very impressed by Southern’s Band and Dance team (as they call them now, I still want to call them cheerleaders). I was fortunate to be sitting almost directly behind the Jaguars bench, these young people put on a very good show.
Gratefully,
Charles Farrington
