The Southern DIGEST, the official collegiate publication of Southern University, recently received honors at the 2006 Southeast Journalism Conference.
A reception last month was held at Emory University in Atlanta and The DIGEST placed in six different categories. Since 1987, a formal competition has been held by the SEJC, judging the journalism skills of colleges throughout Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee.
Former news reporter Matthew Soloman placed fifth in the best special event reporter division, while Joshua Halley, DIGEST photo editor, placed sixth as best press photographer. Robert Jackson and Jeremiah Casson, DIGEST graphic designers, were selected as fourth and sixth placed finishers in their respective categories.
The DIGEST moved from last year’s position as ninth best to seventh best college newspaper and was named the fifth best collegiate Web site.
The top honor was given to Nikki G. Bannister, editor in chief of The DIGEST. Bannister was named SEJC’s 2006 College Journalist of the Year.
“This is a great honor because I was selected by my peers throughout the southeastern United States,” Bannister said. “Their selection is just a result of the hard work I’ve accomplished and I thank The DIGEST and everyone for their support.
“But there’s so much more to expect from us,” she said. “The best is yet to come.”
