The Southern University Office of Career Services recently wrapped up its annual career week promoting career placement and advancement.
The week started with classroom visits from the Youth Motivational Task Force.
Representatives from different corporations talked to the students about communication skills, proper attitude and attire, goal setting and the skills necessary to be successful in the classroom and in chosen career.
“I try to emphasize (to the students) the importance of doing well in their studies and how important it is to keep their grades up,” said David Anderson, YMTF representative from Raytheon.
On Feb. 21, the Business and Industry Cluster held an Interview Skills Workshop.
Members from YMTF gave interviewing advice as well as performed mock interviews.
According to Anderson, it is important to have good oral skills when trying to find a job because your first impression is also your lasting impression.
“I enjoyed the workshop,” said Stephanie Moore, a junior business administration major from Shreveport. “It let me know what I needed to brush up on.”
A Career Fair was held on Feb. 22 in the F.G. Clark Activity Center.
The fair gave students from all majors the opportunity to meet with employers offering co-ops, internships and permanent positions.
Representatives from different companies talked to students about career plans and gave them chances to interview for available positions.
“We want to give the students that exploration push to explore while they are still here at school,” said Al Barron, director of the SU Office of Career Services.
Barron said due to the current economy, many of the majors offered at Southern are not represented at the career fair, but that Career Services is working on getting those underrepresented majors in attendance.
Students can attend informational sessions and sign up for interviews through Career Services.
Each semester, Career Services arranges for representatives from business, industry, governmental agencies, and graduate and professional schools to visit the university, meet faculty and staff, and interview students.
Career Services also sponsors seminars on resume preparation and interview techniques.
