As our country sits on the brink of war, this weekend athletes all over the country were simply sitting. Saturday, usually a very important day in the college athletic world, saw no sports action as most sporting events were cancelled in remembrance of the tragedies afflicted upon our country by attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.
Southern University was set to do battle with the Panthers of Prairie View A & M, on Saturday, September 15, at A.W. Mumford Stadium in Baton Rouge.
But that matchup, along with the rest of the Southwestern Athletic Conference games scheduled for last weekend, were cancelled.
With no game Saturday night, SU practiced last Saturday morning and was off, like normal, Sunday.
“We had prepared to play,” SU coach Pete Richardson said. “It’s tragic what happened, but we have to move on. We have to refocus, get ready to play again this week.”
Teams belonging to the SWAC were scheduled to be played as scheduled, but the decision was reversed Thursday, September 13, in accordance with the vote to cancel their events by many of the other conferences belonging to the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
“I was lost; it didn’t feel right not waking up and getting ready to go to the game, no tailgaters, blocking traffic,” sophomore cheerleader Nina Moch mused outloud.
It is not definite if this game will be rescheduled or cancelled all together. SU and PVU do not have a common open date until November 17.
The Southwestern Athletic Conference’s sdministration will be meeting in the weeks to come to discuss what affect rescheduling or cancellations of all games missed last weekend, could have on conference standings and NCAA – playoff chances.
