It was a night of beauty. It was a night of magic. It was a night of dreams come true and wishes realized.
The coronation ceremony of Miss Southern University, themed “Just One Wish,” was held at the Royal Cotillion Ballroom in the Smith-Brown Memorial Union.
Krystal L. Pugh, a senior majoring in mass communications, is the reigning Miss Southern University of 2001-02.
“When I came to Southern, I had two wishes: To become Miss Freshmen and Miss Southern,” said Pugh. Earlier this year, her dream came true.
The evening was pure elegance and beauty. Miss Southern was joined by her court, Miss Senior – Tiffany Plummer, Miss Junior – Erica M. Walton, Miss Sophomore – Cherish F. Hilton and Miss Freshmen Shante’ Robinson, who was voted last week to represent the freshmen class. All queens were escorted by their class president. Miss Southern was escorted by SGA President, Avery Wilson.
“It was beautiful, the court was presented very well and the way they presented other SU queens was very nice,” said Yosha Sonnier, computer science major.
Miss Southern was carried in royal fashion; her chariot was a float bed, laced with royal colors. Serving as the wheels were four brawny men, who promenaded down the aisle smoothly to the stage where Miss SU’s throne awaited her.
“I thought the coronation was very nice and beautiful. I love the way she entered the room in style”, said Monica Bellard, biology (pre-med).
As the evening proceeded, Miss SU was crowned by Chancellor Edward Jackson, the Honorable John F. K. Belton presented her scepter and she also received a dozen of beautiful red roses.
“Ahh! this year was just magical, opposed to last year, tonight was great and beautiful,” said Nellie Williams, elementary education major.
As the night was nearing to an end, family, friends, faculty, her former high school principal and various campus organizations formed a single line and presented Pugh with gifts. In turn, Miss SU presented her court with gifts of sovereignty.
Music selections were performed by Terral Jackson Trio. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. serenaded Miss SU with a soft diva tune.
SUBR sister school campus queens were on hand to commemorate her night: Miss Southern University at New Orleans – Shantel Lee, Miss Senior – Danielle Henderson, Miss Junior – Itohan Agbonlahor, Miss Sophomore – Dawne Moffet. Miss Southern University at Shreveport – Tremendous Combs, Miss Sophomore – Lane Green, and Miss Freshman. They too were escorted by their class presidents and the Misses was escorted by the SGA president of their university.
Pugh enjoys singing, volunteering and connecting with family and friends. Upon completion of her undergraduate studies, she plans to pursue a career in public relations and ultimately attend law school to achieve her goal of becoming an attorney.
Pugh is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and she is a volunteer with the Office of Publications and Electronic Media.
