The Southern University football team takes on Division I-A Tulane University in the Big Easy Classic, Saturday, September 29, in the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans.
This being the first time Southern will play an NCAA Division IA school, this match up will be a first for the Jaguars. Tulane has not faced a division IAA team since 1993 when they defeated the College of William and Mary 10-0 in the Superdome.
“This will be a great opportunity to see how good our team really is…How good our program has become over the years,” said head coach Pete Richardson.
Tulane’s Director of Athletics also agrees this event will be good for both schools.
“I think this game will be great for the city and for college football,” said Tulane Director of Athletics Rick Dickson. “It will attract fans from across the region.”
Tulane, in the midst of a 0-4 season, is coming off a hard 36-29 loss to the University of Central Florida.
In last Saturday’s game Central Florida got off to a 14-0 lead in their first two possessions of the game.
Tulane then cut UCF’s lead down by 4 with a successful field goal and a touchdown, bringing the score to 14-10.
UCF quickly answered with a 2-yard touchdown.
Tulane managed to gain the lead early in fourth quarter. After recovering a UCF fumble, TU returned the ball for an eleven-yard touchdown, putting the score at 21-19.
Two more UCF touchdowns, and a field goal and touchdown closed the game, score 36-29.
“They are having a hard season, injuries are increasing, but they are beginning to play better and harder,” said Richardson.
The Jaguars are coming off a 32-7 slaughtering of Alabama State University.
“Last week’s victory will help our morale a lot, we will be positive going into this game. We have a lot of players from that area, who played against many of Tulane’s players in high school,” said Richardson. “The only thing I am worried about is that they may get over excited and put themselves out of the game.”
The Jaguars, who are currently 9-1 in the Superdome, with one loss to Jackson State University last season, are ready to play this game, which is game one of a two game deal with TU.
“This game will prepare us for more SWAC play,” said Kerr.
Due to the events that have occurred recently in our country, the Louisiana Superdome has implemented several new security measures. Fans are advised to arrive early and go directly to their seats.
Fans are asked that they do not bring coolers, bags, backpacks, fanny packs and large purses to the game, you will be denied entrance, small purses and diaper bags will undergo a visual search. The no re-entry policy will be strictly enforced. All vehicles will be subjected to searches.
Kickoff is set for 2:30 PM, the game can be heard on station WTGE 107.3 KKAY 104.9 in Baton Rouge, and TU’s station WTIX-FM 94.3 in New Orleans.
