I would like to be the first to welcome everyone back to school. I am happy to inform you that the Student Government Association is ready to work endlessly towards the betterment of our university. By keeping the will of the students as a first priority, we hope to achieve an outstanding number of goals. We ultimately aim to continue the rich traditions that are vested on “The Bluff” as well as add a sensational agenda that will make this year like none other.
If you remember Wilson’s Nine Points, you’ll remember that there were programs & initiatives that encompassed every sector of the student life. Five points of the plan have already been accomplished including the College TV Network, the Freshmen Big Buddy Program, the SGA Hotline — which is activated from 5pm — 8am. Students can dial 771-5515 between the aforementioned hours, waiting for four consistent rings, and tune-in to the newest automated system with a weekly schedule of events. PSP (Pro-action Security Program) the administration has helped in providing 6 new call boxes to be strategically placed around campus, and the lighting in dim areas is continuing to be improved in efforts of better protecting the students.
Lastly, Security Reactionary Exploitation — a program that includes the SUPD developing a web site with statistics and facts in regards to the police department, as well as a Crime Log in The Messenger (SGA Newsletter).
This year’s SGA will work under the mission, “Service Comes First.” This is very significant in that the strength of the student leaders lies within the service we render to others.
We shall continue to give back to the community, and never forget a familiar cliché of service, “The true measure of success is not how far one goes in life, but how often he/she helps others.” I am very optimistic about the year to come.
