Hundreds of Southern University students participated in Fall Career Exploration Day in the F.G. Clark Activity Center on Wednesday, October 19, 2001.
“The Career Exploration Day is not only for students to find jobs, but it also allows students to learn about different career paths they can take in the future,” Julie Wessinger, associate director of Career Services said.
Over 113 businesses including, Walgreens Inc., Johnson & Johnson, Teach America, and the Louisiana Sheriff’s Department, interacted with students about potential co-ops, internships and full time positions.
“We are looking for the students who are not only knowledgeable in their field of study, but who are aggressive and have good social skills, Tracy Brown of Siemen, representative of an electrical engineering firm, stated.
According to Denise Kelley, manager of the simulation and tool software development group for Boeing Inc., Southern University has a very lucrative student job pool.
The Black Collegian, the career and self-development magazine for African-American students, was also on site giving helpful tips on job resources for students.
“This year’s turnout is one of the largest I’ve seen here (SU) in many years,” commented James Nash, Account Executive for The Black Collegian.
“Our main goal is to give black students the information, guidance, and assistance they need to survive and succeed in our demanding society,” Nash added.
Career Exploration is held each fall and spring semester.
