>Southern University had four players from the baseball team to go off to experience minor league baseball. Michael Woods, junior second baseman from Baton Rouge was one of many players who showed their skills of the sort that landed him a spot as the first round draft pick for the Detroit Tigers.
Marcus Chandler, a senior outfielder from Houston was drafted by the Kansas City Royals these players are said to return to Louisiana soon to visit family and take care of other businesses that maybe necessary before returning to designated areas for assignments.
Franco Blackburn, junior in/outfielder from Huntsville, Ala. and teammate Torik Harrison also a junior, and pitcher from Houston both went on to greet the Florida Marlins. Blackburn a 27th round draft pick, Harrison went in the 33rd round.
“It was great, people treated me like I thought they would as if you were already famous, we traveled and played games everyday, and everything was paid for,” Harrison said on his feelings about the change from collegiate baseball to the big leagues. His expects to make the majors in less than five years.
Harrison also said, “I’m looking to go higher and become more productive ” he will return to Florida after a surgery on his elbow later in the year.
Southern was one of the two schools in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) to have players drafted in the 2001 Baseball Draft. Jackson State University was one of the other schools in the SWAC conference to have players drafted. That goes to show fans that are concentrating on just football that the baseball teams are also on top of their game.
The Jaguar football team also added to their list of student-athletes to go pro, free agents Antonio Mays former defensive lineman and Elvis Joseph running back were picked up by the Jacksonville Jaguars.
