First let us take a moment of silence for former sports editor Fred “The Swami” Batiste. He has gone on to a better place…he is now Editor-in-Chief of the yearbook. Good-bye and good luck, Swami, you will be missed greatly.
Enough about the Swami, it is now time for me to welcome all students, faculty, staff and jaguar fans, to a new school year, and to what should be a great year in Jaguar athletics.
Coming off an uncharacteristic 6-5 season Pete Richardson and his team are ready to “Take Back the SWAC.” I do not need to encourage all students to attend this weekend’s game or any other football game, for that is a given. I do, however encourage you to attend the “other” sporting events.
Southern University has ten athletic teams. Not two, not three, but ten. By not being an equal-opportunity Jaguar fan, we as a student body miss out on some great events. I have seen more people at the bands nightly practices than I have ever seen at a volleyball game. We should not only want to support the baseball, basketball and football teams, but we should be supporting the tennis, bowling, cross-country, etc…you get my point.
But, I am not going to harp on that subject; at least not at this point. I am going to move on to another very important topic. I AM NOT the Swami 2, the Swami’s reincarnate, or the Swamiette. I am Niqueta Williams – Simply Redd. This is not the same DIGEST; therefore this is not the same sports section. This semester the sports section will feature four female sports writers, yes ALL female. This section will not be testosterone filled any longer.
Anyway back to what I was trying to say: This is not the same newspaper, so do not expect the same ole, same ole. Expect and you will receive a NEW and IMPROVED DIGEST.
Because this is supposed to be the Welcome issue of the Southern DIGEST, I will end this week’s message with: Welcome to Southern University and the Jaguar Nation.
