Last year the tandem of Ron Johnson and Dwight McKissic ran roughshod over Southern defenders in Arkansas-Pine Bluff’s first win over the Jaguars since rejoining the Southwestern Athletic Conference. This year the All-SWAC running backs combined for only 50 yards as Southern (1-1, 1-0 SWAC) disposed of the Golden Lions (1-1, 1-1 SWAC) 35-14 at A.W. Mumford Stadium.
We had something to prove,” said defensive captain Robert Chapman, who registered six tackles, with two sacks and two more for losses.
Devin Lewis provided the first offensive highlight of the game, corralling a third-down pass from Terrence Levy and taking it 69 yards for the score Francisco Villagrana made the PAT as the Jaguars took a 7-0 lead with 12:14 to play in the first quarter.
The defense shut down the vaunted UAPB running attack again, forcing another punt. It only took the Jaguar offense three plays to score, as Levy connected with Kentrell Plain for a 29-yard touchdown strike. Villigrana’s extra point extended the Jaguars’ lead to 14-0 with 8:22 remaining in the first quarter.
Just minutes after the defense shut down the UAPB offense for the third straight series, Jeremy Williams hit pay dirt on a seven-yard touchdown scamper. The extra point made the score 21-0 with 5:46 left to play in the first quarter.
“We made some big and bad plays,” said Levy, who was named SWAC offensive player of the week after throwing for 223 yards and two touchdowns in the victory.
“We just have to go back and try to correct what we did and did not do.”
Arkansas-Pine Bluff finally scored on LaKendrick Powell’s one-yard run with 10:10 left to play in the first half. Southern kept the Golden Lions at bay while extending the lead on Antoneyo Williams’ one-yard run with a 31 seconds left to play in the first half. The Jaguars went into halftime with a 28-7 lead.
UAPB cut the lead to 14 points on a 15-yard pass from Powell to Mark Bradley with 7:39 left in the third quarter. Southern put the game out of reach late in the fourth quarter, as Jaccari Williams picked up a fumble and raced 65 yards for a touchdown. The fumble recovery gave the Jaguars a 35-14 with 1:22 remaining in the game.
