The 26,453 people assembled at the Ladd-Peebles Memorial Stadium saw the Jaguars get revenge on the Alabama State Hornets. After being defeated last season 37-33 at A.W. Mumford Stadium, the Jaguars went to Mobile ready to do battle.
Southern University’s Dog-Day defense held the Hornets to only one score, as the Jaguars defeated Alabama State 32-7.
“We went into this game ready to play,” said head coach Pete Richardson.
SU’s first score came as a successful field goal by punter Francisco Villagrana.
The first quarter closed with Southern ahead 3-0.
The lead was widened by six with a 22-yard touchdown pass from Terrence Levy to Devin Lewis, late in the second quarter.
The third quarter opened with another successful field goal by Villagrana. Score Southern 12, Alabama State 0.
Al’Trevion Joubert, fresh off the injury list scored the second touchdown of the night, on a 9 yard pass from Levy, topped off by a successful extra point by Villagrana.
Southern continued to dominate the Hornets, as they went on to score two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter.
Jeremy Williams, 50 seconds into the last quarter of the game scored on a nine yard run, complete with an extra point, score Jaguars 25, Hornets 0.
Southern’s last score came in the middle of the fourth in the form of a 66-yard interception return by Lenny Williams, extra point good.
With the score 32-0, Southern lead, the Hornets finally managed to put a score on the board. Alabama State’s Larry Bias scored on a nine-yard-run extra point made good by Thomas Elmes.
“We just came out ready to play, we knew they had good team,” said quarterback Terrence Levy. “Everyone just came out and played hard.”
The offensive and defensive players of the game both came from the Jaguar team. Lenny Williams left cornerback was the Gulf Coast Classic player of the game and Southwestern Athletic Conference’s Defensive Player of the Week. Lenny Williams had three interceptions for 66-yards and one touchdown. Jeremy Williams running back for Southern was the Offensive player of the game. Williams ran for 123 yards and one touchdown.
