It was the sound of feet stomping, hands clapping and a lot of shouting that took place on The Yard this past Sunday.
No, it was not a Greek show.
The Southern University Student Programs held their annual Spiritual Explosion at the Cotillion Ballroom in the Student Union.
“This year was not a great turn out – unlike last year, but I am sure it will get better as the message gets heard,” said Marian Griffin, coordinator of Student Programs.
As everyone bowed their heads, opened their hearts and mind, the congregation was led into an opening prayer by Dana Hunter.
For many who were in attendance for the first time, they had no idea of what was in store for them – a gospel treat. Kenya Dabney, biology major, performed an acappella solo act.
“I don’t know about you guys, but we have enough explosion in this room to keep him (the devil) away”, said SGA president Avery Wilson, who emceed the afternoon explosion.
Organizations, members, churches, choirs and youth groups from all beliefs professed their faith and the gospel to nearly 150 members in attendance. Youth groups with kids ranging from the age of five to 15 years olds participated in the spiritual explosion.
“I am very happy to see a great turn out,” said Edward Jackson, Chancellor of Southern University.
Jackson praised SU Chairman, Board of Supervisors, the honorable John F. K. Belton for his leadership of spiritualism both on and off campus.
“I am a Jaguar. I bleed blue and gold, but red comes first in my life,” said Belton.
The performers at the spiritual explosion included St. Mark United Methodist Church, Bethel AME Church, Higher Ground Outreach Ministries, the Magnificent Praise Drill and Step Team, Soulja Boyz, SU Interdenominational Choir, Chosen for Christ Step Team from the Full Gospel United Pentecostal Church, Holy Young People Evangelism (HYPE), and Deacon Leon Hitchens from Roman Enterprises. Dr. Raymond A. Downs, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs was also in attendance.
Rev. Anthony Allen of Salvation Ministry of Jesus Christ ended the service with a closing prayer.
