On August 22, hundreds of Southern University students filled the Felton G. Clark Activity Center to complete registration for the Fall 2001 school semester.
This process is still stressful to some students, but due to such advances as ERIF (Early Registration for Incoming Freshmen), JAGNET and JAGCALL, students no longer have to camp out in front of the “Minidome” for classes. It is now possible for registration to be completed without even leaving the comfort of home.
With ERIF, Jagnet and Jagcall the amount of time it takes to become completely registered is cut in half. Students are able to select their classes and pay before the official registration period even begins.
ERIF allows beginning freshman to select classes with their advisors and pay early. “I think registration went better than it has in previous years,” Charles Scott a junior computer science major from New Orleans said. “Students avoid the long lines and they get first pick at classes.”
JAGNET and JAGCALL enable students to add and drop classes via Internet and telephone. The course selections are online and the students do not have to waste time tracking down course selection catalogs. The task is easier because it eliminates all the extra paper work involved in adding and dropping classes the regular way.
But despite all the advances in registration there were still complaints. Students were concerned with the way preregistered students were handled.
“Registration was frustrating to me because they kicked out schedules from students who participated in early registration if they had not paid by a certain date. Registration should have waited until all students returned to do that,” Tas Johnson, sophomore, accounting, New Orleans.
Students also complained heavily about the length of time it takes to receive refund checks. “Registration is wrong for making students pay out of their pockets if their scholarship money has not arrive on time. If they waited until that money arrived that would eliminate the whole process of passing out refund checks,” Allison Brown, sophomore, business, from Monroe.
With ERIF, JAGNET, JAGCALL and other advances Southern University students soon will not have to dread the registration process. Although there are still a few kinks, the faculty and administration at Southern are working hard to make registration less complicated.
The long lines and anxiety will disappear, and registration will be hassle free for both students and faculty.
