Homecoming 2001: A Reunion on the Bluff comes to an end Saturday evening at 6:30 p.m., with a match-up between the Bulldogs of Alabama A&M University and the Southern University Jaguars.
After last week’s 41-7 loss to Tulane, the Jaguars are ready to get back to conference play.
“We have a conference championship to win,” said head coach Pete Richardson. “I just hope we don’t lose our spirit.”
The Bulldogs and Jaguars will be meeting for the fourth time in as many years. With a 31-20 Jaguar victory last season, SU leads the series 2-1.
In last year’s game played in Huntsville, Alabama at the Louis Crews Stadium, the Jaguars jumped out to a 21-0 first quarter lead.
Dain Lewis opened the game with a touchdown on a six-yard pass from Terrence Levy. Lewis’ touchdown was followed by a 35 yard passing touchdown by Al’Trevion Joubert.
Devin Lewis closed the first quarter with a 46 yard passing touchdown.
The only score of the second quarter came from the Bulldogs. With 40 seconds left in the half AAMU’s Terrence Day scored on a 27 yard pass.
The second half saw an improvement in the Bulldog offense with the addition of two touchdowns to the scoreboard. A Michael Hayes touchdown closed the game, Jaguars win 31-20.
The Bulldogs, who had the nation’s number one defense for the 2000 season is coming off a victory over Texas Southern University. With a score of 24-10, the Bulldogs are now 1-2 for the season and 1-0 in the SWAC.
Kickoff for Saturday’s game is set for 6:30, at A.W. Mumford Stadium. The game can be heard on WTGE 107.3 and KKAY 104.9. You can also catch the game on Pay-per-View.
* Security for Saturday’s game has been increased. The State Police, Baton Rouge Police, East Baton Rouge Parish and West Feliciana Parish Sheriff’s Department will be assisting the Southern University Police. Fans are asked to not bring bags of any kind into the stadium. If it necessary to bring a purse or diaper bag, please prepare to be searched. Mumford Stadium will open at 3:30 pm. Parking permit holders are asked to enter the campus on Swan Street or B.A. Little Street, all others should use Harding Boulevard.
Southern University and Louisiana State University will be teaming up with the Red Cross to help aircraft disaster victims as a result of September 11th attack on America. Red Cross volunteers will be stationed at A.W. Mumford Memorial Stadium and Tiger Stadium, shaking cans for financial donations to help those in need after the attacks and victims of Tropical Storm Allison.
