Over 50,000 fans are expected to attend this match-up between the Southwestern Athletic Conference’s powerhouse teams of the 90s. SU and JSU have won seven of the last eleven SWAC titles; Southern four, Jackson State three.
Jackson State and Southern will be meeting each other for the 25th time; Southern leads the series 23-21, winning five of the last six outtings. In last season’s event, Jackson State managed to edge the Jaguars out 13-10.
This interstate rivalry seems to always bring out the best in both teams. Both teams have large fan bases that are present at most home and away games.
“You say ‘Jackson State’ and people get fired up,” said head coach Pete Richardson.
In last season’s game JSU kicker Brian Reynolds kicked two field games of 34 and 38 yard to lead the Tigers to victory.
JSU is coming off an upsetting loss at the hands of Alabama State University. Alabama State defeated the Tigers 61-58, destroying their undefeated record. J-State quarterback “Superman” Robert Kent completed 38 of 57 passes for 595 yards and six touchdowns in that loss to Alabama State.
Southern is returning to action after a narrow win over the Bulldogs of Alabama A&M. The Jaguars slipped passed the Bulldogs 23-20, in a game marred with turnovers.
Kickoff for Saturday’s game is set for 7 p.m. at the Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium. All fans are encouraged to arrive early due to increased security measures. Fans will not be allowed to tailgate from their buses and groups taking up more than one parking space will be charged a $20 tailgating fee. The cost of parking is $5 for cars, small vans and trucks, and $8 for RVs.
