Suppose you go to your mailbox…Find a letter addressed to you stating you’ve won a million dollars (you know how much we love free money)…so you open up the envelope-real fast…so fast that you don’t notice that fine white powder on your hands. A week later, you are suffering from fever, chills, and muscle aches. Thinking you’ve come down with the local bug, you go to the infirmary to pick up some free Robitussin; but instead, you pick up a free ride to the Department of Health to be quarantined and observed because you may have been touched by the Anthrax “bug”.
How will you deal with this? If affected, how will your family and friends deal with it? Better yet, will they even deal with you?
True enough, the best way we as citizens can combat terrorism is to keep living life to the fullest. We must let the enemy feel that we can still go on. But bio-terrorism is a whole new game…and are we as a student body ready to play?
We as members of this esteemed institution need to prepare for this highly unorthodox, yet widely utilized method of warfare.
Not only should you prepare for Anthrax, but also I hear that bio-terrorists are attempting to scare us with the Ebola virus and cowpox. Did you know that they are also trying to bring smallpox back on the scene? I’ve had chicken pox, and if small pox gives you an itch like chicken pox does, I don’t want it. Trust me, we are not ready.
Henceforth, I, performing my duty as a “Sentinel of an Enlightened Student Body”, petition you to get all of the information you can on bio-terrorism. Contact someone who is knowledgeable in the Microbiology or Chemistry Department. Talk to a health care professional at the infirmary or your local hospital. You have a right to know if your health care provider is adequately stockpiled with the right antibiotics to combat these “weapons” and save your life.
Search the web and contact the local Department of Health or call the Center for Disease Control.
Don’t get complacent and think that it can not happen to you. The life you save may just be your own. Because as of October 2001, Southern University is not ready, Louisiana is not ready; the United States is not ready.
Let’s get ready.
And that’s the way I see it…
