Going into halftime down 10-3, the Jaguars knew they had to make some changes both strategically and mentally in order to come out victorious over the Bulldogs of Alabama A&M.
In the end, Homecoming 2001 came to a close with a hard fought 23-20 win over AAMU.
“We kind of came out lackadaisical and underestimated our opponent,” co-defensive coordinator Terrence Arnold said. “But in the second half we locked it up.”
The game got off to a comical start with four fumbles in the first five minutes of the game, complete with a missed field goal by Southern’s kicker Francisco Villagrana.
After seven possession changes Southern managed to score three points on a successful field goal by Villagrana. AAMU came back with a one-yard touchdown by quarterback Chris Gunn. A successful kick by Rashad Cylar brought the score to 7-3 AAMU lead.
AAMU widened their lead with a 31-yard field goal by Tom Bambauer to close the half with a score of 10-3, Bulldogs over the Jaguars.
The Jaguars returned to the field after halftime with a renewed will to win.
Two Devin Lewis’ touchdowns, coming late in the second half, made a great impact on Saturday night’s final score.
Freshman running back Carl Singleton, who ended the night with 91 yards rushing, got the second half started with a 4-yard touchdown run, complete with extra point, by Villagrana.
At the close of the third quarter Lewis scored six more for the Jaguars on a 60-yard touchdown pass from Terrence Levy. Minutes later Lewis returned with another touchdown made possible by a 33-yard touchdown pass from Levy. Score Jaguars 23 Bulldogs 13.
The final score of the night came from the Bulldogs, as Reggie Johnson made good on an 86-yard interception return. Final score Southern 23 Alabama A&M 20.
This was a difficult victory for the Jaguars, who had to regroup after coming off a huge loss to division I-A school Tulane University.
“We just had to find a way to get the receivers the ball, come up with some schemes to make big plays,” said Lewis.
Standouts in last weekend’s game were Devin Lewis and Chris Cooper, who for the second time this season was honored as the Southwestern Athletic Conference’s Newcomer of the Week. Cooper had career highs of ten tackles and two sacks against Alabama A&M. Levy completed 16 of 33 passes with three interceptions.
The Jaguars will be in action Saturday, October 13 against the Tigers of Jackson State University, in Jackson, Mississippi at the Veterans Memorial Stadium at 6:30pm.
