Southern University’s homecoming week has ended and just around the corner are mid-term exams.
After planning for weeks in advance for your homecoming preparations it’s now time for reality to set in and make preparations for the up coming mid-term week.
Mid- terms exams are scheduled for October 15th— 20th. Usually your mid-term grade will determine if you will continue taking the class you are in or “drop” it from your schedule.
“The hardest thing to me is the beginning, it is hard to get started studying,” said Nykisha Franklin, senior Marketing/Management major from Lutcher.
According to the Virginia Technical Division of student affairs, excuses are one of the main reasons students wait until the last minute to study.
Here are some excuses and realistic answers to tell yourself when these particular excuses pop into your head.
Excuse: I’m not in the mood right now.
Realistic Answer: Mood doesn’t do my work, actions do. If I wait for the right mood, I may never get done.
Excuse: I’ m just lazy.
Realistic Answer: Labeling myself as lazy only brings me down. My work is really separate from who I am as a person. Getting started is the key to finishing.
Getting started here are some tips on how to get started from Middle Tennessee State University’s Study Skills Site:
1. Start Now- It doesn’t matter if your test is scheduled for Wednesday of next week and it is only Friday. Break it down study little by little and you will remember the information better.
2. Understand your learning style- Associate the way you learn with anything you can relate to.
3. Using acronyms may help. Make a word using the first letter in each word you are using to study.
4. Take time out- If you are feeling stressed stop for a while and take a few deep breaths to clear your mind.
“It’s time for me to buckle down and start studying so that I won’t have to cram beginning next week,” said Lance Allen, a freshman Computer Science major from Grammercy.
