Southern University Chemistry Department received a $15,000 scholarship from Chevron Chemical Company for students majoring in chemistry and chemical engineering.
The check was presented to Dean Robert Miller of the College of Sciences on August 30, 2001.
Two of the representatives were alumni of Southern University: Oliver Cyprian, a chemist and 1973 graduate, and 2000 chemical engineering gradate Jason Jones.
Expressing their desire to “give something back” to Southern University, Cyprian and Jones came up with the idea of making Southern one of the institutions receiving scholarship funds from Chevron.
“These funds will help Southern University to prepare future Jason Joneses and Oliver Cyprians,” said Blaine Fury, a supervisor at Chevron.
“Nowadays recruiting good students are like recruiting athletics, we can attract some of the best students with this scholarship,” said Robert Miller, Jr. Dean of the College of Sciences.
To be eligible for this particular scholarship, you must have a 3.2 GPA, a 23 on the ACT and must be a chemistry or chemical engineer major.
“The scholarship will do great for the recruitment of our department. It will bring a lot of students in.,” said Mary K. Sims Chemistry major at Southern University.
