The Southern University “Human Jukebox” marching band has been placed on probation by the university.
According to Bob Bennett, dean of student life, incidents of hazing was reported to the Southern University Police Department on September 10. They were placed on immediate probation on October 4.
“As a result of the information we received and through investigations that we conducted the whole band was placed on probation,” said Bennett.
The probation as described by Bennett means that they are on probation from October to December and if any violations occur during that time period and if any truth is found during an investigation the band will be automatically suspended indefinitely from performing at any upcoming activities including football games.
“There were some hazing but I took care of it,” said Dr. Isaac Greggs, Director of the band.
According to Bennett parents of a freshman band members came into his office and complained that other members of the band were hazing their son.
The two band members who were accused of hazing the freshman have been charged with simple battery and placed on probation by the university until their date of graduation.
The incidents, which allegedly took place on August 24, consisted of excessive exercising, getting hit on the back of the neck with drumsticks and holding certain positions for extended periods of time.
“Hazing is a felony in the state of Louisiana and we will treat this issue very seriously,” said Bennett.
Bennett also noted that if the student who was hazed obtains any medical bills the accused students would have to make restitution.
“I heard about it (the hazing) and I did something about it, I suspended them,” said Greggs.
