The Southern University Bowling team started the 2001 season, Saturday, October 19. SU bowled all over the Lady Golden Lions of the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
“They missed a lot of spares, but the team did the job, we led with over 800 pins,” Head Coach Karen Couvillion.
The final score for SU was 4413 pins and UAPB 3595 pins.
The tournament started with SU leading in singles games with 2051 pins.
“The team performed well under the rough lane conditions,” said Captain Michelle Rangel. “We have a few things to work on as the season progress we will get better as a team.”
Lyndsey Stewart led the team in singles with 575 pins. Leigh Buickerood bowled a six-seven split in the singles game, a very difficult move to accomplish. Reynika Tillery bowled 551, Leigh Buickerood 481, Bernadette Wooly 492, and Michelle Rangel 544. SU led in the three doubles games with 989 pins bowled by Rangel and Stewart.
Walk-on freshman Michelle Austin, who bowled in her first tournament ever Friday, surprised the team with a great first time performance. Austin and
Buickerood bowled 891 pines in doubles.
“Michelle Austin came in as a first time bowler. She bowled in the three double games with Buickerood. She did very well for her first time bowling. As the season progresses she will become an asset to our team,” said Rangel.
Tillery and Wooly bowled 928 pines Wooly showing big improvement from her singles games.
“As Michelle mentioned the lane conditions were not what we are use to bowling on,” said Couvillion. “Over all the team performance was good but we still have a lot of work to do.”
The team finished the tournament with five Baker matches. Buickerood, Wooly, Stewart, and Rangel were the line up for the match for SU bowling team. SU won the Baker matches with 781 pins.
The Southern bowling team will be in action November 2-4, in Southern Classic Tournament in Atlanta.
