More than 70,000 fans will converge to New Orleans during the Thanksgiving holidays for a weekend long celebration of the State Farm Bayou Classic XXVIII.
Mostly known for its main attraction, the gridiron battle between the mighty Jaguars of Southern University and the fighting Tigers of Grambling State University, the Bayou Classic offers a variety of activities that appeals to all ages.
“Bayou Classic weekend is the time when everyone enjoys the Battle of the Bands, Greek Show, and Bourbon Street,” said Brian Webb, a senior computer science major from Montgomery, Ala.
The week begins with a press conference on Monday, November 19 at 11:00 AM. on the field of the Louisiana Superdome.
On Friday, November 23 at noon a luncheon highlighting the careers and accomplishments of two of the most respected and renowned historically black universities will take place in the Grand Ballroom of the Hyatt Regency–New Orleans. The Coaches Luncheon can be attended with an invitation only.
Students can network with companies to make important connections that will enhance their career outlook at the Super Job Fair November 23 at noon in the French Market Exhibition Hall of the Hyatt Regency–New Orleans.
Representatives form companies such as Bell South, Delta Airlines, Hewlett Packard, NASA, Raytheon, Urban Box Office, and State Farm Insurance will be on hand to interview and select outstanding students for employment.
Individuals interested in attending the Super Job Fair must bring with them resumes.
Ten contestants from SU and GSU will vie for the covenant title of “Miss Bayou Classic” at the State Farm Miss Bayou Classic Pageant on Friday, November 23 at 8:00 PM in the Grand Ballroom of the Hyatt Regency–New Orleans.
The attire for the event is semi formal. General admission is $25 and student admission is $15.
The real competition begins with the Battle of the Bands and Greek Show on Friday, November 23 at 7 PM in the Louisiana Superdome. Admission is $15.
Fraternities and sororities from other HBCUs including our own Alpha Tau Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Inc. and the Alpha Sigma Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity will dazzle the crowd with synchronized rhythmic step routines.
“We have been practicing really hard and we are going to represent Southern University and Kappa Alpha Psi to the fullest,” said Junior Terrance Boyd, a broadcast journalism major from Kansas City, MO and a member of Kappa Alpha Psi’s step team.
The weekend culminates on Saturday afternoon November 24 with a battle between two of Louisiana’s premier historical black institutions–Southern University and Grambling State University.
“I am from Baton Rouge and I come home every Thanksgiving weekend just for the game,” said Traci Whiten, a sophomore mass communications major at Clark-Atlanta University. “The people and the atmosphere makes me realize that there is no place like home.”
The game and halftime show will be televised live on NBC beginning at 1 PM.
Tickets prices for the game range from $28-$90.
The weekend ends with a concert featuring renowned recording artist Maze featuring Frankie Beverly Saturday, November 24 at 9:00 PM in the New Orleans Arena next to the Superdome.
