On November 10, the Astrodome will be the site of the Tiger Paw Classic, when Texas Southern University Tigers plays host to the Southern University Jaguars.
The Jags are in full momentum after their heroic last minute 17-14 defeat of the Florida A & M Rattlers last week.
In last year’s meeting, the Jags defeated the Tigers 49-29 at A.W. Mumford Stadium before 19,061 fans. Despite leading the Southwestern Athletic Conference in defense, the Tigers allowed the Jags 667 total yards. This season, the Jags have flipped the script as they lead the SWAC in total defense, but expects the outcome to be the same.
“Offensively, the ball must be protected; defensively, we must create turnovers,” said Coach Pete Richardson.
When confronted about concerns in regards to the artificial turf at the Astrodome, all worries were put aside as Coach Richardson stated that the team should not be concerned about the turf and as a team, they “can’t lose focus.”
The team must not lose focus on the reality that RB Carl Singleton will be out for the rest of the season with a torn ACL, while RB Leroy Jackson is predicted to be out for up to three weeks with a cartilage tear in his shoulder.
Although faced with multiple player injuries, the Jaguar offense does not intend to be thwarted in their pursuit of beating TSU for the fifth time in a row. With a list of injuries long enough to make up a new squad, the Jaguars will be faced with task of using young players with very little experience. Coach Richardson expressed that being in the position of having to use young players sent out a message that at any moment, a player could go from being “in the outhouse to the penthouse in this game”. In last week’s game against FAMU, QB Anthony Fisher and RB Leroy Fisher demonstrated the Jaguar Nation could count on them when duty called.
Defensively, he is also proud of his linemen, particularly linebackers Shannon Smith, Chris Cooper, and Robert Chapman.
“These young men possess excellent speed with the ability to flush quarterbacks out of the pocket,” stated Richardson.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00p.m. at the Astrodome, in Houston, Texas.
