This is my first editorial.
The purpose is just to let everyone know what my job is as a sports writer. My job this semester has been to give sports teams that receive the least amount of publicity the publicity that they deserve. To be honest with you, I think that I am doing a pretty good job at it. So far, I have covered bowling and cross-country and the other sports writers are taking care of tennis, golf, volleyball, softball etc.
I know that is not easy to cover all ten sport at Southern but that is no excuse for people not knowing that Southern has a bowling team and cross-country. While covering these sports, the amount of appreciation I receive is wonderful. I would like to say thank you to all coaches and the teams for their appreciation. I know that I am serving a better purpose giving these hard working teams the credit they deserve.
Therefore, for as long as I am here you will know how well all the teams are doing or not doing any team status will ever go unknown. The bigger issue here is to answer the questions: How is the winner in of cross-country meet determined? How is cross-country scored? I usually answer the question by saying the team with the least amount of points wins. However, I have learned that answer is not sufficient.
So let me explain, there are usually about have five or more teams in a meet each team has to have five runners some teams have more but the first five to come in first counts for the team. The team who places lowest in the meet wins. I know you are still confused so I will elaborate a little further. For example runner 1 places 2nd, runner 2 places 12th, runner 3 places 5th, runner 4 places 10th and runner 5 places 15th you add these numbers up and you get the score 44. A perfect score is 15 that means all the runners placed 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th,and 5th. That score determines what place the team comes in. So now, I hope that you can understand why the lowest score is the better score, because each individual runner on the team had the best finishing times which means they were faster runners.
The beauty in this sport and any sport you watch the closer the team sticks together the better the outcome is in the end.. After attending several cross-country meets I have noticed that the teams that place first their runners usually place closely together.
SU’s cross-country team after a few meets has progress to that point. My editorial is not at all to preach to you about supporting these teams but to let you know that these teams deserve as much respect as any other team. They work just as hard as anyone else does. I also wanted to explain to you somethings that you may not have known about these sports in general.
