And no I am not mad because we lost the Bayou Classic (more on that later). I am mad because I love Southern athletics but sometimes Southern athletics does not seem to love me.
Take for instance the men’s basketball team, I understand you are going through a transitional phase, and Ben Jobe is looking for the right combination of players, but can you all at least try? BJ (Brian Johnson), if your shot is not working then take it to the hole. Use your height and speed. Jonathan “J-Blaze” Oliver, baby I just want you to calm down a little, take your time, and then play your game. I am not going to sit here and dog the whole team, because there are some players who are giving their all and then some. Tim Johnson keep doing what you do. And to the injured parties, stay strong, eat right and get lots of rest, because come next spring you will be needed.
Another reason why I am mad, our football team got jacked, when it came to picking the all-SWAC teams. I believe we had a wonderful year. We lost roughly 13 starters, including our starting quarterback Terrance Levy, Michael Hayes (who would have been our starting wide receiver) and running back Carl Singleton. We still posted a respectable 7-4 season. Yet did the rest of the SWAC take this into consideration when choosing the first and second team all-SWAC members? No. Only one of our players garnered first team honors; Gary Jenkins (Congrats). Robert Chapman, Michael Landry, Lenny Williams and Josh Davis, men who made some big plays for us, only made it onto the second team.
Where are Ezra Landry and Devin Lewis. Where is Perry Davis as “Freshman of the Year” and Chris Cooper as “Newcomer of the Year”?
So, yes I am mad. But, I know being the optimistic person that I am, things can only get better.
Redd not madd!
In conclusion, I would like to say, my first semester as editor of sports for The Southern DIGEST, has been a pleasure. I am so thankful that I even received this opportunity, for I know some schools would not have allowed a lowly female to be in charge of sports.
I would like to thank Mr. Derick Hackett -Director of Student Media Services for caring so much about this paper that he forces us to be good, because he thinks we are good and thanks for the new computers. To all the SU board and administrators thanks for the much needed new office space in Harris Hall.
Thank you to my mentor, my friend Fred “the Swami” Batiste, without you I would be nothing. To Brandi Jade Thomas, we should all be thanking you for letting us have so much control, for trusting us. Gary “G-way” Holloway, for your insults which only made me want to do better, and to Gabrielle “Gab” Maple for making us laugh at 2 a.m.
To the sports information staff, Kevin and Chris, you all are the best, keep those stats coming. And last but not least, I must say thank you to “My Girls.” Alicia, LaJuana and Nikki, I do not know what I would do without this group of wonderful young ladies, who are proving that women do belong in the world of sports.
So, here’s wishing everyone a Happy Holidays, from Niqueta Williams — Simply Redd.
