Southern University presented its fall students with a new campus pharmacy.
The pharmacy, located in the Baranco-Hill Infirmary, officially opened at the beginning of the 2001 fall semester.
According to Pam Metoyer, Student Health Services Supervisor, the funding for the pharmacy was derived from student health fees, donations from the public and private companies.
The Baton Rouge Sponsors Area Foundation, Texas Health Resources and Blue Shield of Louisiana were the three major contributors.
“Some private companies donated money for the whole building, not just the pharmacy,” said Metoyer.
” When students pay the $40 student health fee, that entitles them to unlimited doctor’s visits, nurse visits and all the stock medication,” said Metoyer.
Metoyer also stated that she is displeased that the law school students pay only $16 dollars and receive the same services because the students that attend the law school refuse to pass the referendum.
According to Vanessa Pourciau, pharmacist, the students come in and they are seen by the doctor, after the doctor writes out their prescription the students bring it to her to receive their medication.
” I dispense the medication to them with the written orders form the doctor,” said Pourciau.
Pourciau explained that the pharmacy does not give students refills on anything and that if students are still having problems they can come back for more medication.
The medication the pharmacy has in stock is name brand as well as generic.
Porciau is in charge of selecting the medication stocked in the pharmacy.
” I try to pick the more reputable generic brands,” said Pourciau.
The pharmacy is open from 8-4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
