Okay I’d like to know how many people remember the game last year when Scotty Anderson caught a seven-yard touchdown pass for Grambling with seven seconds left and the score 31-29. And THEN…on the two-point attempt, Lenny Williams tipped Randy Hymes’ pass and Edreece Brown snatched it and ran that ball the length of the field for a safety leading Southern to win the Bayou Classic 33-29.
Man, wasn’t that just the highlight of the game? It was like whatever to what happened throughout the game this is all that matters we won SORRY Doug. Another thing that had my whole equilibrium messed up was the fact that they ejected Mike Hayes from the game within minutes for something that he didn’t do. I could see if he took a stab at the dude, but he didn’t. SWAC officials. Gotta love ‘em.
Now it’s that time again for us to wreck shop on the Grambling State Tigers. One of their former students, a die-hard Gramblinite, said we should be prepared for a beat down, and watch out for the Quarterback Randy Hymes. Okay wasn’t Randy Hymes the quarterback last year? Didn’t we win? So he may be a little bit better this year; that doesn’t mean they are going to win. I’ll say just like last year’s game, anything is possible.
Some say Southern is going to lose this year due to us losing Michael Hayes to injury, along with others. As for me, I think we can do it without him. We’ve done it and still doing it. No offense to Mike Hayes, but we made it this far: 6-3, 4-1. Now at a chance to make it to the SWAC Championship.
For me last years’ game was a game I will not forget. It was only my second time attending a Bayou Classic game. And actually watching the game. Most people just go to see who they can see and forget the significance behind the game. These guys are out on that field playing something they love.
See to them it is more then just the Battle of the Bands and the Greek Show on Friday night (I ain’t knocking it because I love the Greek Shows and the Battle of the Bands). It’s more then just seeing those ten beautiful ladies compete for Miss Bayou Classic (Props to the reigning Miss RaShaune Payton), but its about scholarship, leadership, sportsmanship and the SWAC Championship. Which will take place on December 1, 2001 in Birmingham, AL.
If Southern wins that Bayou Classic they will face either Alcorn State or Alabama State in the Championship game. So I say GOOD LUCK JAGS, Bring us home another win.
