World-renowned clarinetist and Southern University as-sociate professor of wood-winds Patricia Martin died last Thursday from an allergic reaction to prescribed medicine.
Services for Martin will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, at Rabenhorst Funeral Home, located at 11000 Florida Boulevard in Baton Rouge.
With degrees she earned from The Eastman School of Music, Manhattan School of Music and Michigan State University, Martin has held faculty pos-itions at Southeastern Lou-isiana, University of Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana State Mu-sic Academy and Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Michigan.
She has been a principal clarinet with the Baton Rouge Symphony, currently under Timothy Muffet, since 1996. Also, she has performed with the Acadiana Symphony, Dayton Philharmonic, Ohio Chamber Players, Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, Louisiana Sinfonietta, Natchez Opera and Loma Linda Symphony Orchestra, among others.
Most recently, Martin was a guest artists at the Universidade Estadual do Ceara, Rio de Janeiro and also performed the Mozart Clarinet Quintet with the Baton Rouge Symphony String Quartet.
She made her Carnegie Hall solo debut at Weill Recital Hall in 1999.
Martin was initiated into the Kappa Kappa chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota in 2006. According to Sigma Alpha Iota members, “Martin always said that she wanted a stadium full of people cheering her on, as she went to heaven.”
