As both Democrats Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama rally for votes during the presidential primaries, Southern University students may gear toward Obama for the upcoming Feb. 9 Louisiana primary.
According to Assistant Professor of political science Dr. Albert Samuels, Southern students may come in droves to vote for the Ill. senator if he gains enough states before the states primary.
“With Southern being an HBCU and the primary being held during black history month, many students may vote with the feeling of becoming apart of history,” said Samuels.”
With the media focused on Clinton being the front runner last year, many wanted to know what republican she would face but now the race looks like its going to be neck and neck according to Samuels.
“This has turned into a heavy weight fight between Clinton and Obamba,” said Samuels.
While Obama’s message of change has rallied many to his cause, it’s experience that has sophomore businesses management major from Beaumont, Texas Karenton Parker leaning toward the N.Y. Senator’s camp.
“Both will make history though I feel Hillary has more experience,” said. ” I do feel that one should step down an become vice-president.”
In preparation of the upcoming primaries, the Student Government Association held a voter registration drive last fall and will hold one before Feb. 9.
” I believe Southern students should remind the world of the not only the African American vote but the African American youth vote,” said Student Government Association President Carey Ash.
When it comes to who he thinks will win the Democratic primary, Ash doesn’t have an idea of who could win out though he wants both to focus on education and health care.
” The air of indecision is apparent in the nation and the question of Barack/Hillary will soon be discovered,” said Ash. ” We’ve have to teach in order for our future to compete in this globalizing world.”
Currently, Obama is in the lead with 25 delegates compared to Clintons 24 with the next major primary being held in S. C. on the 26th where blacks make up 50 percent of the Democrat vote according to Samuels.
