SU women’s basketball team shot lights out Monday night in its 60-48 win over Mississippi Valley State converting on 46% shooting in the first half and 50% in the second.
Southern (5-10, 3-3 SWAC) was led by freshman Courtney Scott who scored a career high 16 points to go along with five rebounds. Senior center Frederika Lewis moved up on the school’s all-time scoring list with 12 points, enough to move past Thelma Wilhite and LeKeysha Johnson to the eight spot.
“She was huge. I can’t say enough about that,” said head coach Sandy Pugh.
Plus, Red-shirt freshman Freda Allen had 10 rebounds, good for her sixth double digit rebound game this season. Allen finished the game with three blocks, two points, and two assists and a steal as well. Junior Deidra Jackson also contributed with 10 points.
“We went back with our bigger lineup on defense with Tiffany (Foster) and Courtney, because they create havoc,” Sandy Pugh said. “They’re long. They’re athletic. They create problems for smaller guards, so I went back to what I was doing; I went back to the basics. And the other thing was I wanted to play everybody. You usually have good energy on the road when you can play a lot of people.”
Southern will see its first true test of the season as the Jaguars face a three game home stretch against Alabama A&M, Alabama State and Alcorn. That test begins Saturday at 2 p.m. when the Jaguars take on A&M in the F.G. Clark Activity Center.
On Monday, the Jaguar women will host Alabama State at 5:30 p.m., and the men’s game will be broadcasted live on ESPNU at 8 p.m.
