For the first time in its five year history the Southern University Lady Jaguars won the Southern University Bowling Invitational Tournament.
“It was a win we needed going into the rough part of our schedule,” said head coach Karen Couvillon. Jackson State took second while Morgan State University grabbed third place.
Southern was led in the invitational by Cassandra Shivers who won the MVP award for averaging 212.7 the highest of any bowler during the two-day event.
“I was surprised I won the most valuable player award it was a good shock,” said the Leander, Texas native. “It’s exciting that we won bowled really well all weekend, we worked really well together and as a team we won.”
Joining Shivers on the All-tournament team was SU’s Vanessa Caldwell who finished second out of all bowlers with 210.6. Jackson State’s Ashley Blakley finished third with 210.3. Prairie View A&M’s Kristina Sadler finished fourth with a 204.7 average while St. Peter’s University Bridget Lacey rounded out the top five. The New Jersey native ended the tournament with a 202.8 average.
Other teams that participated in the tournament included Alabama State, Louisiana Tech and Mississippi Valley State.
