A night of mystical dreams of enchanted paths was the vision for a perfect Miss Southern Coronation of Mhykeisha Katrese Evans.
Evans was crowned the 78th Miss Southern University on Wednesday, October 8, in the F.G. Clark Activity Center by Chancellor Kofi Lomotey and Miss Southern 2007-2008, Jasmine Smutherman.
“My coronation—words couldn’t really describe it.” said Evans in excitement. “It was way more than what I asked for with all of the practices and all of the preparation you still can’t get ready for a night that’s made just for you, I almost feel like it’s the second best thing to my wedding.”
The theme “Against All Odds: Mystical Dreams of Enchanted Paths” said it all and turned into a coronation none like any other. The decorations set the perfect mood for Miss Southern.
Christopher Strozier, senior and special education and rehab major from Atlanta, was impressed by how new and different by this year’s coronation.
“It was nice, beautiful and different; there were costumes. I like how it’s mandatory for the freshmen seminar classes to go, so it made a bigger crowd…coronation was beautiful in a nut shell.”
The event was welcomed with Arabian Nights-themed music and genie dancers who danced the guests to their seats, such as the processional and visiting royalty.
Visiting royalty included Southern University Laboratory School, Southern University -Shreveport, and Southern University-New Orleans.
“It was a real beautiful coronation, very different and awesome at the same time. I was very excited to attend,” said Jakiya Nishon Clay, Miss SUNO.
Miss Southern’s Royal Court was dressed in royal blue to grace Miss Southern along her mystical enchanted path.
“It was really a dream come true to be on court, I would really like to do it all over again,” said Crystal Parker, Miss Junior.
A genie bottle was rubbed, and Miss Southern appeared with her traditional gown and sparking glow that won the crowd.
“I believe that this coronation was just like the theme said: it was very enchanted,” said Jerrica Skidmore, mass communication major from Gonzales. “It was very elegant, nice; I enjoyed the presence, the atmosphere and I look forward to next year and to be more enchanted.”
The mother of the queen was blown away at the event and how everything fell into place.
“I felt ecstatic, it was a great coronation and more than I expected it to be, but like her dad always told her to go after her dreams and she did”, said Betresea Evans.
Past queens attended the event as well, to praise and welcome the 78th Miss Southern University, such as Miss Southern 1996-1997, Heather Williams.
“I love coming back to the coronation each year, you get to see all of the Miss Southern’s that you’ve known forever and this year we have this new group called the Southern Sisters so it was like the big thing this year.”
Miss Southern’s Promenade was welcomed by the Southern University Gold ‘N Bluez Dancers and was presented with numerous gifts amongst her Processional.
The escort for the queen, SGA President Jamal Taylor enjoyed the event.
“I thought it was a beautiful event, and I think that it was wonderfully planned, Miss Southern was beautiful, and the court was beautiful ,it was just a lovely night.”
